Zakat Nisab Threshold in 2026: Complete Guide

Nisab (نِصاب) is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess for one lunar year (Hawl) before Zakat becomes obligatory. If your zakatable assets stay above Nisab for the full year, you pay 2.5%. Below it, you owe nothing.

The number itself is not arbitrary. The Prophet ﷺ established two parallel benchmarks in classical hadith collections: 20 dinars of gold (≈ 87.48g) or 200 dirhams of silver (≈ 612.36g). Today, these are converted into your local currency using the daily spot price.

2026 values — approximate

Prices fluctuate daily. ZakatBooks pulls live precious-metal prices so your Nisab is always current.

Which standard should you use?

This is the most-asked Nisab question. There are two reputable positions:

  1. Silver standard (majority of contemporary scholars). The lower threshold means more people qualify, more wealth is purified, and more poor recipients benefit. Bodies like NZF UK, AMJA, and JAKIM recommend silver.
  2. Gold standard. Some scholars argue that since silver has dramatically depreciated relative to its 7th-century purchasing power, gold better reflects the original spirit of Nisab as 'meaningful wealth.'

Both are defensible. The majority safer-default opinion for individuals — and ZakatBooks' default — is the silver standard, because it maximizes Zakat going to those entitled to it.

What counts towards Nisab?

Not counted: your primary residence, personal car, household furniture, work tools, and clothing.

How the Hawl interacts with Nisab

You don't start your Hawl on January 1st. You start it on the day your wealth first reaches Nisab. If your wealth dips below Nisab during the year and returns above it later, scholars differ:

Worked example

Yusuf had $400 on 1 Muharram. By 15 Rajab his savings reached $850 (above silver Nisab). His Hawl starts 15 Rajab. On 15 Rajab the following year, if his zakatable wealth is still ≥ Nisab, he pays 2.5% of that day's total — not 2.5% of his average balance.

Common Nisab mistakes

  1. Using last year's Nisab number. Prices change — check current.
  2. Assuming the gold standard because it's higher. The silver standard is the safer default.
  3. Forgetting to count business assets, jewelry, or crypto.
  4. Confusing Nisab (the threshold) with Zakat itself (the 2.5% you pay above it).

Calculate yours

Open the Zakat Calculator inside ZakatBooks. Live Nisab is shown at the top. Add your cash, business inventory, investments, gold, and crypto. If you're above Nisab and your Hawl date has passed, the system computes your Zakat and produces a downloadable statement. May Allah accept it from you.
