The Hawl Rule: 1 Lunar Year of Wealth Tracking Explained

Zakat isn't payable the moment you cross Nisab. There's a waiting period: you must hold the wealth for one full lunar year (Hawl) before the 2.5% becomes due. This single rule is the source of more Zakat confusion than any other — so let's walk through it carefully.

What 'one lunar year' actually means

A lunar year is approximately 354.367 days — about 11 days shorter than the solar year. Across a decade you'll pay one extra Zakat compared to a Gregorian schedule. This matters because using the wrong calendar accumulates error.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no Zakat on wealth until a year has passed over it." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi — graded hasan/sahih). The 'year' here is unambiguously the Hijri lunar year.

When does your Hawl start?

Your Hawl begins on the day your zakatable wealth first crossed Nisab. Not the day you opened your bank account, not January 1, not the start of Ramadan — the day your wealth crossed the threshold.

Example: Asma had $200 throughout 2025. On 3 Sha'ban 1446 her wealth grew to $900 — above the silver Nisab. 3 Sha'ban is her Hawl date. She'll calculate and pay Zakat every 3 Sha'ban going forward, as long as she remains above Nisab on that date.

Does the Hawl reset if wealth drops?

This is the most-asked question and the schools differ:

Practical guidance: Pick a school and apply it consistently. For most working adults whose wealth fluctuates within a normal band well above Nisab, the question never becomes practical.

Wealth added mid-year

If you already have a Hawl running on, say, $5,000, and three months in you add another $3,000 — does the new $3,000 get its own Hawl?

The majority position: no. If the new wealth is of the same type as the existing wealth (cash adds to cash), it merges into the existing Hawl and is paid at the same date. Only completely new asset classes (e.g. starting livestock) trigger a separate Hawl.

This rule exists for mercy — otherwise you'd be tracking dozens of Hawls for every salary deposit.

Inventory and the Hawl

For business inventory, you don't track each item individually. The business as a whole has one Hawl. On your Hawl date you take the snapshot of current inventory value + cash + receivables and apply 2.5%. Inventory turning over during the year doesn't disturb the Hawl.

Setting your Hawl date

Many Muslims simply set their Hawl on the 1st of Ramadan. There are three reasons this works:

  1. It's the most virtuous month for charity (rewards multiplied).
  2. It's memorable — you won't forget.
  3. Paying earlier than your actual Hawl is permitted (it's like paying ahead). What you can't do is delay without excuse.

If you do this, your first year may include slightly less than 12 months of holding for some funds — that's fine, it's an early payment.

Tracking the Hawl with software

ZakatBooks' Hawl Tracker stores your Hawl date, monitors your wealth daily, alerts you 30 days before your Hawl, and produces a draft Zakat statement on the day itself. You can adjust the date, switch schools' rules, and download the historical record at any time.

Final reminder

Zakat is one of the five pillars. Tracking the Hawl accurately isn't a bureaucratic exercise — it's an act of worship. Build a system you trust, write down your Hawl date today, and Allah will bless the rest.
